Prayers

Prayers Needed We pray for those suffering all over the world, the poor and the hungry. We pray for those struggling with autoimmune conditions, addictions, cancer and other health issues, especially Peter, Heather and Reverend Bill MacKinnon. We pray for comfort for those grieving especially Heather in the loss of her mother, Mabel Young in the loss of her sister, and Flora whose nephew Brian has passed away recently. We pray for all those affected by hurricanes especially the Maritimers. We continue to pray for the people of the Ukraine and all those living in fear.

Quotable Quotes

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.”

John Newton, who wrote the words to “Amazing Grace”, was a slave-trader. He led a strange and colourful life, beginning with his being drafted into the British navy. He actually became a slave himself for a while in West Africa, until he was rescued by a sea captain whom his father knew. On the ship returning to England, Newton had a near-death experience, when he was saved from shipwreck, and he started thinking and reading about God and spirituality. He eventually gave up seafaring, devoting himself to the study of theology, and was ordained a clergyman in the Church of England. Amazing Grace” was written when he was an assistant minister (and popular preacher) in the town of Olney in Buckinghamshire. Later, Newton became an important “abolitionist” or opponent of slavery. He wrote an influential pamphlet (sent to every British MP) arguing for the abolitionist cause and expressing deep sorrow and remorse for his previous slave-trading activities. It was in the Unit- ed States where “Amazing Grace” was first sung to the tune we know, and where the hymn became popular.

See you Sunday, and Happy Singing!
